1811 Info 4a for Elizabeth Crompton |
John HORNSEY, born third quarter of 1844 (GRO ref: Beverley 23 11) was the third child of Elizabeth CROMPTON and Richard HORNSEY. He married Jane Helena HARGRAVE in the fourth quarter of 1872. (GRO ref: Hull 9d 398), who was the origin of the second name of their first child. The 1871 census suggests that the family had moved to 8 Prince Street, Hull. Jane Helena HORNSEY died in the first quarter of 1878 (GRO ref: Hull 9d 133) aged 25.
In the second quarter of 1880 Ellen BEDELL married John HORNSEY (GRO ref: Hull 9d 363). Ellen BEDELL was born in the third quarter of 1857 (GRO ref: Skirlaugh 9d 222). It is possible that the 1871 enumerator mis-transcribed Ellen's name as Helen. This census is problematic because Preston, Helen HORNSEY's declared place of birth, was in the registration district of Sculcoates. However, BEDELL was the surname of the sister-in-law/nursemaid who was born in the second quarter of 1859 (GRO ref: Skirlaugh 9d 222). Both BIDELL ladies, recorded as sisters in the 1871 census, lived in Daily Hill, Lelley near Preston.

Above: A map locating The Park, Beverley Road, Hull, named after Pearson Park | Above: The Park (Hotel, Beverley Road) was described (2007) as a small, basic, two roomed front-to-back local pub. A feeling for the 'hotel' can be seen in the back room, panelled in dark wood, - now the pool room - is complete with a period wood panelled fireplace. The effect - except for the pool table - is just like stepping back in time. |
An Ellen HORNSEY died in the first quarter of 1890 aged about 32 (GRO ref: Hull 9d 190) and a John HORNSEY, aged 44, in the same quarter and year (GRO ref: Hull 9d 187). This would explain John and Ellen not appearing in census subsequent to 1881 and their children being 'fostered' to relatives.
The children of John HORNSEY and Jane HARGREAVES
The 1881 census records three children, two by his first wife and one by his second wife.
Amy Helena HORNSEY was born in the second quarter of 1873 (GRO ref: Hull 9d 126)

There is no obvious record of the death of Frances, Frances G*, Francis or Frank Booth between 1911 and 1955. A Frank Booth died in the first quarter of 1922 aged 55 (GRO ref: Eccleshall Bierlow 9c 363). This district is located to the south-west of Sheffield.
The children of John HORNSEY's second marriage to and Ellen BIDELL - John William HORNSEY and Myrtle May HORNSEY
In the fourth quarter of 1911 a John HORNSEY married Lucy BRIGNELL (GRO ref: Sculcoates 9d 521). John William HORNSEY, their first child, was born in the second quarter of 1880 (GRO ref: Hull 9d 292), the same quarter as his parents marriage. His sister Myrtle May was born in the second quarter of 1884(GRO ref: Sculcoates 9d 237).

It is possible that in 1891 John William was staying with Ann HORNSEY because his parents had died the previous year.
This Ann HORNSEY appears to be the widow of Richard HORNSEY born Newbald in 1825. The 1861 census shows her to be married to Richard and living at 1 Shaw Yard, High Street, Bridlington. In 1861 she gave her place of birth as Swinton, Yorkshire which is as near to Mexborough as Bolton [upon Dearne].
In the 1891 census Myrtle May was living with her aunt Sophia HORNSEY/ BERGMAN.

John William's cousin William, born 1877.
