Originally, in the 1822 will of John's grandfather, Thomas of Bridlington, the properties in Bridlington and Nafferton were to be held in trust by Thomas Richardson CROMPTON until 1832 when it was to pass to Thomas, John's eldest brother. But by 1840 John appeared to be farming Houndales, on his own ...

This census also shows that Thomas Richardson and Martha's grandchild Paulina was also living in North Street. Paulina was the illegitimate child of Elizabeth CROMPTON, born 1811, and Thomas LUCKHURST.
The 1841 census shows Ann at Houndales, but there is no obvious record of John. Was he working at Thornholme where the family were found in the 1851 census?

The farm is not named in any of the census returns. In 1861 it is the tenth building listed by the enumerator. There are four shapes which create a farm yard image. However, the census only lists one farm in the village and one named farm, Moor Farm, near Two Gates Houses. |
